Not at all. Every person who trains here started exactly where you are right now. Our program is built from the ground up for beginners, and experienced students are here to help you learn — not run you over. Show up, keep an open mind, and we'll handle the rest.
As a thank you to the community who believed in The Foundry from the beginning, we are offering introductory founding member pricing to our earliest members.

NOTEs:
You'll meet the instructor, get a tour of the facility, and sign a participation waiver. From there you'll be introduced to fundamental concepts at your own pace. No one is going to throw you to the wolves on day one. The goal of your first class is simple — feel welcome and leave wanting to come back.
Yes — and safety is something we take seriously here. Jiu-jitsu is one of the most controlled martial arts you can train. Beginners start with movement, technique, and drilling before any live training is introduced. You set the pace, and your training partners are coached to work with you, not against you.
Never. Competition is completely optional at The Foundry. The majority of our students train for self-defense, fitness, personal growth, or simply because they love it. If competing is something you want to explore down the road, that path is available — but it will never be expected or pressured.
The opposite tends to happen. Kids who train jiu-jitsu learn to manage conflict calmly because they're no longer afraid of it. When a child knows they can handle themselves, they don't feel the need to prove it. What you'll likely see is a quieter confidence, better focus, and improved self-control — on and off the mat.
Two to three times per week is the sweet spot for most beginners. It gives your body and mind time to absorb what you're learning without burning out. Consistency matters far more than volume — the students who improve fastest aren't the ones who train every single day, they're the ones who show up regularly over a long period of time.
On a practical level, jiu-jitsu gives kids real tools to protect themselves if a situation becomes physical. But more importantly, it changes how they carry themselves. Bullies typically target kids who appear unsure or fearful. A child who trains jiu-jitsu develops a presence and confidence that makes them a far less likely target in the first place.
Most students notice meaningful improvement within the first few months — better movement, more comfort on the mat, and a growing understanding of what's happening during training. Jiu-jitsu is a long game, but the early wins come faster than most people expect when you're training consistently in a structured environment.
No. Come to your first class in comfortable athletic clothing — shorts and a t-shirt are perfectly fine. If you decide to continue training, we can point you toward affordable gi options that won't break the bank. Don't let gear be the reason you don't walk through the door.
Honestly — the culture. There are good jiu-jitsu gyms within driving distance of Burlington. What we offer that the drive can't give you is a gym built specifically for this community, by someone who lives here and genuinely cares about the people on this mat. Training is serious and structured, but no one here is trying to dominate you. We push each other because we want each other to grow. That's the standard, and it doesn't get compromised.
